The Drone Program
Elevating public safety
Welcome to the Springfield Police Department's Drone Program. Here, we harness cutting-edge technology to enhance the safety and well-being of our community and our officers. Discover how our drones provide critical advantages, from rapid response to advanced tactical intelligence, all while fostering transparency and accountability. We're committed to making Springfield safer and more enjoyable for everyone, and our Drone Program is a testament to that dedication.

Rapid response, real-time intelligence
In critical situations, every second counts. Our drones are designed to arrive at a scene in under 90–120 seconds, often beating patrol cars by several minutes. This provides crucial "eyes on" intelligence before an officer even steps out of their vehicle. Commanders gain immediate insights, such as identifying if a suspect is armed, the number of individuals involved, or if a vehicle is leaking hazardous fluids. This allows us to send the right resources, reducing guesswork and improving initial response effectiveness.

Enhancing safety for all
The safety of our officers and community members is paramount. Drones significantly reduce risks by enabling us to "clear" buildings or monitor high-risk standoffs without immediately sending officers into potentially dangerous, "blind" situations. Beyond officer safety, supervisors can utilize aerial views to guide ground officers, promoting de-escalation and preventing unnecessary use of force incidents. Furthermore, drones equipped with thermal imaging are game-changers, finding heat signatures in dark or smoky areas and locating missing children or elderly wanderers where ground searches might fail.

Efficiency, evidence & community trust
Our Drone Program isn't just about immediate response; it's also about long-term efficiency and community benefit. For major traffic accidents or crime scenes, drones can map areas in 3D in a fraction of the time it takes ground teams, allowing roads to be reopened hours sooner and improving evidence collection. This technology also allows us to communicate with suspects or victims from a distance. Importantly, about 25% of calls can be cleared by a drone without ever sending an officer, keeping our ground units free for actual emergencies. We believe in transparency; many departments now use "Flight Dashboards" that allow the public to see exactly where and why drones were deployed, helping foster trust and accountability.
